Secular and Secularism

Imdad Robbani writes a good piece discussing the controversial nomenclature of secular, secularim and secularisation. The term secular which is commonly defined as "the separation of state and churce (read, religion and politics) have a different impact between Indonesia and Indonesia. While it's proud to be secular in India, any Muslims are reluctant to say so in public in Indonesia.

Israel offers short respite from strikes

By "respite" means Israel reduce the excessive bombing from 24 hours a day into 21 hours a day:

Israel will halt its bombardment of Gaza for three hours every day to allow residents of the Hamas-ruled Palestinian territory to obtain much-needed supplies, a military spokesman said Wednesday.

CNN's Sanjay Gupta Tops Obama's Surgeon General

CNN Reporter Tops List for Surgeon General

Dr. Sanjay Gupta, a neurosurgeon and CNN’s chief medical reporter, is the leading contender to become the next surgeon general, a pick that will give the moribund office a higher profile but one that has received a mixed reaction among public health advocates.

CNN confirmed Tuesday that Dr. Gupta had been approached by the Obama transition team and discussed the job with President-elect Barack Obama late last year in Chicago. Dr. Gupta did not respond to an e-mail message seeking comment.

UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon calls for Gaza ceasefire

To Israel, UN is non-existence, US is. In American politics, Israel is everything. Obama and any American presidential candidates gotta attend the AIPAC "show". Otherwise, you're gone.

Un Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza as Egypt’s president Hosni Mubarak has summoned Israeli leader Ehud Olmert to Cairo to discuss a peace plan that could end the escalating conflict.

Germany’s wealthiest man commits suicide

It's when one faces a situation like Adolf Merckle is facing where spiritual guidance is needed to create hope. Otherwise, you'll end up precisely like he did: killing himself along with the death of hope he pursue all his life. Religion often times is not needed, especially when your mental state is in "normal condition."

Adolf Merckle, one of Germany’s wealthiest men, committed suicide after weeks of talks with creditors designed to save his businesses from being consumed by disastrous investments and the global financial crisis.

The billionaire, 74, was said by his family to have been “broken” by the sight of his business empire, which ranged from pharmaceuticals to cement, crumbling. He died on Monday evening, apparently hit by a train a few hundred metres from his home in southern Germany.

Israel Hits U.N.-Run School in Gaza

Even a US pro-Israel newspaper (which are not, anyway?) like the Washington Post has to tell this Israel attrocities although with a little twist of "self-defense":

JERUSALEM, Jan. 6 -- Israeli soldiers battling Hamas gunmen in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday fired mortar shells at a U.N.-run school where Palestinians had sought refuge from the fighting, killing at least 40 people, many of them civilians, Palestinian medical officials said.

The Israeli military said its soldiers fired in self-defense after Hamas fighters launched mortar shells from the school. The United Nations condemned the attack and called for an independent investigation.

"We are completely devastated. There is nowhere safe in Gaza," said John Ging, head of the U.N. Relief and Works Agency in the Gaza Strip

HP Mini 2140

PC Magazine has a very flattering review on the Atom-Powered HP Mini 2140:

The HP 2133 Mini-Note was and still is ahead of its time, design-wise, with an aluminum finish that made the original ASUS eeePC 4G look like an infant's toy.

As one of the first netbooks that cultivated a revolution, it was enticingly presented and crafted to look like its Elitebook business siblings. But it wasn't without flaws. Specifically, the Via processing innards weren't at all speedy and required excessive cooling, resulting in significant fan noise and heat coming from the base.

The newly minted HP Mini 2140 changes all that, replacing the older parts with faster and more energy-efficient ones from the Intel Atom platform while keeping the impeccably fresh design intact. It's basically a business and education version of the HP Mini 1000, and will be presented this week at CES 2009 in Las Vegas.

Obama picks Leon Panetta for CIA director

A shake-up is coming?

President-elect Barack Obama will name former congressman and Clinton White House chief of staff Leon Panetta to head the CIA, tapping a veteran government manager who once oversaw the top-secret U.S. intelligence budget but has no hands-on espionage experience, Democratic officials said on Monday.

If he's confirmed by the Senate, Panetta would take over an agency that's leading the fight against terrorism as it struggles to overcome the damage dealt to its credibility and integrity by its Sept. 11 and Iraq intelligence failures and by its use of interrogation methods on suspected terrorists at secret prisons that many experts consider torture.
