Free Domain and Free Hosting

You may have got a blog already in blogger.com / blogspot or wordpress.com for quite sometime. And now you want to go to another level by creating a blog in a self-hosted wordpress-powered blog. What to do?

You either buy a domain and webhosting from some webhosting services in Indonesia or abroad; or go for a free services provider which gives you free domain and hosting. At least, during the 'period of training'.

If you choose the second step, here's the tips.

One, create a free domain in CO.CC or CZ.CC. Tutorial in Bahasa Indonesia can be found here. Register for CO.CC here, and for CZ.CC here.

Two, sign-up or register for a free hosting here* or here**. Follow the steps given. After the process is done, you'll get two name-servers which you have to put in the domain.

Happy blogging with a free self-hosted wordpress blog!

Notes:

*http://www.000a.biz offers the best free hosting services with 11 GB Disk Space & 400 GB Bandwidth, No Advertisements, Banners, or Pop-ups, Free FTP, MySQL, and phpMyAdmin, No less important, the Automatic script installer (Fantastico) which make installing wordpress or other blogging platform just a few clicks of the mouse.

000webhost.com is also ok. That's said you should not be tempted to use the 000webhost.com's affiliate program as it's notoriously known as scam i.e. never pays you a dime even after you got many referrals. More about this here.

**esc-webhosting.co.cc is a free hosting provider owned by an Indonesian. I never tried this service. I also don't have a clue if Fantastico panel is available which is very necessary. Please comment in the comment box if you did.

Create Sitemap in Blogsome

Blogsome.com is a free wordpress-hosted blog which still use the old Wordpress MU. So, you won't find any widget here. That's said, some people are still using Blogsome because it's a bit like blogger.com in the sense (a) you may insert adsense or any other javascript based ads; and (b) you have the freedom to access and change the html codes in the css, index, single post and comments something you won't find in any other wordpress based free services.

For example, you may 'hack' your blogsome.com to create Sitemap as follows:

1. After login -> Manage -> Pages -> Create new Pages -> in the Page Title name it "Sitemap" -> click "Create New Page"
2. Click "Manage" -> Files -> index.html (by default)
3. In the index.html, find this code: {$content}
4. Copy and paste the following code below it:

{if $smarty.server.REQUESTURI == '/sitemap/'} <h2>Site map</h2 <ul>{wplistpages}</ul> <h2> Categories</h2> <ul>{listcats optionall='1' all='All' sortcolumn='name' optioncount='0' children='0'}</ul> <h2>Posts</h2> <ul>{getarchives type='postbypost' limit='' format='html'}</ul> {/if}

5. Click "Update Tempalte". Done.

SEO Friendly Headings

SEO Friendly Heading tags standard for any websites. The goal is so that search engines will recognize it as "important" on your web page. The heading tags will make your headline bolder so it will stand out.
The heading tags are <h1> <h2> <h3> <h4> <h5>

These are the samples of heading tags in use

<h1>Blogger Indonesia A. Fatih Syuhud</h1> [Title of website / blog]

<h2>SEO Friendly Headings</h2> [Title of post / artilce]

<h3>a. SEO Friendly Heading Tags for Wordpress Blog</h3> [heading inside a post / article]
<h3>b. SEO Friendly Heading Tags for Blogger BLogspot</h3>

If the heading tag structure are not properly set, you may edit it in the page.php and single.php if you're using a self-hosted wordpress blog. If you use wordpress.com blog, you may use the heading tag inside the post / article only.

Feedjit Widgets

If you have a newly set-up blog, you need to install one of Feedjit widget in your sidebar to have your blog indexed quicker by major search engine like Google. It's one of the easiest way. There are four types of widget. You need to put just one of them. Preferably, Live Traffic Feed. Visit this site copy the code and paste into your blog's sidebar (if you're blogging in blogger.com or self-hosted blog); if you're blogging in wordpress.com, you may visit this link instead.

The Live Traffic Feed will let you know who has come to your site and how (via search engine or other websites, etc).

Once your blog gets indexed by Google, you may remove the Feedjit widget if necessary.

To know if your blog is already indexed or not, just go to google.com and type this word in the search box : site:yourblog.com (there should no space between site: and the blog's name).

Example: I'll type [site:farzanesfandiar.blogspot.com] to know if the blog has been indexed by Google.

Notes:

If you're really a newbie and no clue whatsoever on how and where to put the code, here's the simple steps:
For Wordpress.com: Widget -> Text ->Drag into the Sidebar -> Paste the code -> Save.
For Blogger.com / Blogspot: Page Element -> Javascript / HTML -> Paste the code -> Save.
