English Media in Indonesia

Indonesia media in EnglishThere are not many English-speaking media (newspapers, magazine, portal) in Indonesia. In fact, they are very few compared, for example, to its neighboring countries like Malaysia and Singapore.

Among the below mentioned, only The Jakarta Post and The Jakarta Globe which have its print version.

Most Indonesians actually learn English since Class V. They understand English, at least the grammar. Since English language is not the lingua franca (bahasa pengantar) in most Indonesian school, rather it is just one of subject among many other subjects in the class, they don't speak it. That's why, no publishers ever have the gut to publish any newspapers in English.

The following list of Indonesia media in English below is to tell non-Indonesians that if they want to know the latest news about Indonesia, they know where to go. Or if this list is not enough, they can go through Google News on Indonesia (in English) which come from various foreign media publication.

The Jakarta Post
The Jakarta Globe
Antara Indonesia News Agency (English version)
Kompas.com (English version)
The Bali Times
Vivanews.com (English version)
Tempo Interactive (English version)
Inside Indonesia (Published from Australia)
Google News on Indonesia (from various sources)

Let me know, via the comment box, if you find out other English speaking media in Indonesia other than those already mentioned.

English Usage of In At On

A non-native English speaker feels that in practice preposition (in, at, on) is one of the most difficult one. I oftentimes confused how and when to use what. My immediate response to this confusion is: use any preposition whatever I like; which I think suitable for a particular word. This "insting response is certainly politically incorrect. Here's a brief manual guide on the prep stuff.

Preposition Use - in / at / on - prepositions of place

IN

Use 'in' with spaces:

in a room / in a building
in a garden / in a park
Use 'in' with bodies of water:

in the water
in the sea
in a river
Use 'in' with lines:

in a row / in a line
in a queue

AT

Use 'at' with places:

at the bus-stop
at the door
at the cinema
at the end of the street

Use 'at' with places on a page:

at the top of the page
at the bottom of the page
Use 'at' in groups of people:

at the back of the class
at the front of the class ON

Use 'on' with surfaces:

on the ceiling / on the wall / on the floor
on the table
Use 'on' with small islands:

I stayed on Maui.
Use 'on' with directions:

on the left
on the right
straight on

IMPORTANT NOTES

In / at / on the corner

We say 'in the corner of a room', but 'at the corner (or 'on the corner') of a street'

In / at / on the front

We say 'in the front / in the back' of a car
We say 'at the front / at the back' of buildings / groups of people
We say 'on the front / on the back' of a piece of paper
Test Your Understanding

Now that you have studied the use of on / at / in as a preposition of place, try the follow-up quiz to test your understanding.

Preposition Use - in / at / on - prepositions of time and date

IN

Use 'in' months and years and periods of time:

in January
in 1978
in the twenties

Use 'in' a period of time in the future:

in a few weeks
in a couple of days

AT

Use 'at' with precise time:

at six o'clock
at 10.30
at two p.m.

ON

Use 'on' with days of the week:

on Monday
on Fridays

Use 'on' with specific calendar days:

on Christmas day
on October 22nd

IMPORTANT NOTES

in the morning / afternoon / evening - at night

We say in the morning, afternoon or evening BUT we say 'at night'
